Random Reviews: R5-D4 (Star Wars Vintage Collection 2011)

Because I'm ridiculously bored and I feel like reviewing some thing I bought. Funny enough, I don't think this toy's supposed to be out until March, but I was able to pick him up from my local Walmart for about $7.

Ladies and gentlemen, R5-D4, the most important droid in the galaxy who saved everybody by fucking up really badly.

There have been plenty of R5-D4 toys in the past, but this one's just been released as part of the new "Vintage collection". Here's a photo of my own:

From what I've gathered, this toy is actually a repaint of R5-A2, a droid whose parts came with certain figurines and could be put together. This was called "Build-a-Droid". As such, you can take R5 completely apart and put him back together again, and mix-and-match his parts with the other two Build-a-Droid astromechs. Aside from this, he comes with no other special features.

There's really not much to complain about. It's just a very simplistic, almost perfectly accurate toy of the droid. The only issue is that there are supposed to be three red panels painted on R5's back, but apparently they forgot them. Which is, actually, a mistake they seem to constantly make with R5. At this point, the only toy of R5 which gets his panels on the back painted was the original toy from 1978; no other toy since has managed to have them. But then again, it's a very minor issue and doesn't take away much enjoyment of the toy itself.

Jawas: the used car salesmen of the Star Wars universe.

On a more serious complaint, I don't like the legs being made of rubber instead of hard plastic. Sure, it makes it easy to attack the legs to the torso, but also makes the legs lack something in detail. I don't know, it just really bothers me.

If you haven't had an R5-D4 toy since The Power of the Force missile-launching version, go out and grab this to make up for that. I'm sure there's probably a better R5 toy available somewhere, but this one's nice and cheap enough. It's not going to blow your mind or anything, but it's cute. I really like the R5 look...there's something retro about it that makes it so endearing. Maybe I'll get another one and have him custom painted...

Hard Driver Superfail!

On Wednesday, my computer stopped functioning properly. Such as, when I would try turning the thing on, it would bluescreen just after the Windows logo and restart. The thing wouldn't work in Safe Mode either.

So I decide to bring it over to BestBuy, and see if the GeekSquad can fix it. Thankfully, my computer's still under manufacturer's warranty, so the exam was free. They told me it would be about two days before they could tell me anything.

This morning, I got a phone call from them. Guess what? I've got a faulty hard drive! And getting it replaced would cost me about $350, but thankfully, HP covers that under my warranty. All I need to do now is call them up and ask for my computer's installation CDs which, shockingly, my computer did NOT come with.

But now the real problem: they might not be able to save my stuff. My hard drive is so bad that even if I do fork over at least $100 to backup my files, they might not be able to do it. So that's a good 5 year's worth of files...GONE. Including my novel, porn, other stories, sprite artwork, random funny images from the Internet, videos, music...

What a lovely birthday gift. Thank you, HP. Thank you.

Thomas and the Confused Canadian

"Bust my buffers!" exclaimed Thomas. "Me, in politics?"

Earlier this week, University of Alberta political studies Professor Shauna Wilton watched several episodes of the children's TV show Thomas and Friends with her three-year-old daughter Kate. She then heavily analyzed each episode, and finally came to the conclusion that the television series was sexist and conservative; in her view, it was pushing children to suppress new ideas and to only do as their told, and portraying the female characters as inferior to the male-dominated cast. While it’s no secret that the majority of Thomas characters are male, Shauna’s views of the show are rather misleading, straying away from the show’s true meanings and intentions. What she is describing is simply not there; there’s no room for political correctness in a show about anthropomorphic locomotives.

Sharon explains that the show is “conservative” as when an engine decides to do something on their own accord, as opposed to what Sir Topham Hatt (the Fat Controller) tells them to do, it only ends up in disaster, confusion, and delay. She feels that this discourages children to think for themselves and instead simply follow orders from superiors without question. Here, she completely misses that the railway of which Thomas lives is a big, important industry that supplies countless people all over the Island of Sodor. It’s not the United States of Sir Topham Hatt; it’s the North Western Railway, a job, a company, an important place of work that requires order and stability. Engines that work their hardest do eventually get their perks, as any human with a real job would, and back-talking and laziness are grounds for punishment. Thomas himself is the perfect example of this; starting out as the lowly shunting engine at the Big Station, he eventually proves himself to be Really Useful and earns his very own branch line. There are no underlying political messages hidden here. All that’s being said is that hard work and determination will reward you in the long run, a message children today need to hear.

As the misinformed article continues, Sharon also points out the minority of female cast members, decrying them for all having negative characteristics and not getting as much spotlight as the classic characters that have been around since the very first season. "The female characters weren't necessarily portrayed any more negatively than the male characters or the male trains, but they did tend to play more secondary roles and they're often portrayed as being bossy or know-it-alls," Sharon says. What Sharon has not seen is that what negative qualities are introduced to the female cast are not made to push them aside from the male engines, but instead are used to characterize them and make them more believable, likable members of the railway. What’s fantastic about the new female characters is that they’re not the politically correct Mary Sue character, the strong female lead that snags the spotlight from the original characters. Both the male and female characters have their flaws, and this helps them to grow and develop with each story. Take for example Mavis, who started out as a young feisty diesel full of her own ideas and constantly made mistakes. In recent years, she appears to have calmed down and become a reliable member of the railway, playing a motherly role towards the two more immature tank engines Bill and Ben. Mavis, like any believable character, has gone through character development, and thanks to this, she can provide a fantastic role for young girls watching the show. It’s shameful that despite so many of the female engines are wonderfully characterized and are steadily gaining more screen time, there will always be a stigma about the lack of positive girl characters.

The “Political Correctness Brigade” has no place in the Thomas and Friends universe, as in the end, it’s a form of children’s entertainment, and nothing more. There are plenty of positive messages and role models in the show that children can look towards and learn from, and the show gets better every year. Shauna Wilton should have further evaluated the stories, settings, and messages from the show before she completed her study, as she missed out tremendously on all the things that make the series as long-lasting as it has been.

Tell me, how awesome would it be to be riding around in your backyard on your own little railway with your own little engine? Very awesome. And to make it better? Get a coach for it to pull, and charge people for rides. Put a face on it and cater to little kids' birthday parties, and you're rolling in money.

Plus the thing's damn adorable. Don't you just want to hug it? :3

If it wasn't so expensive for a college student like me, I'd have one of these right now.

So it's been a while, my friendly old blog.

In a few hours, I'll be out of my house and inside an apartment. I'll be beginning my life as an independent person. I'll be doing what I do now...just without somebody always there to make sure I do them.

I have to say, I'm both excited and terrified. In truth, no matter how many times they've talked to me about living on my own and growing up, I don't think that will be enough to prepare me for the future ahead.

But I guess the only way to find out if you'll make it is to give it all you've got, right?

This is a formal letter to all of those who participated in demanding Japan to ban all adult games.

I hope you all feel very proud of yourselves.

Inevitably, because of your actions, rape-based erotic gaming has indeed been banned in Japan. However, this law comes along with many other bans, including bans against things that were otherwise perfectly normal and not related to rape at all. These all fall under the words of "promote violence again, or violate the human rights of, women".

The law bans almost all forms of erotic gaming, save for the missionary position and anything related to homosexuality.

Although the "slippery slope" argument is usually invalid, it's beginning to feel very real in this situation. A lot of people are outraged from these bans, and are now pinning the feminist movement with suppression of artistic freedom and suppression of freedom for men. I think it's perfectly fine if women want to have the same rights as men - but for that to be true, women cannot demand MORE rights than men.

The law is not a knife to delicately carve curves into a statue - it's a big ugly steamroller, crushing everything that may or may not be what it intended to destroy. And it just steamrollered over erotic gaming, and fear of the feminist movement worldwide can only predict what else it will flatten in the months and years to come.

Too Many Zune Rumors Starting to Annoy Me

So within the past two years, I've heard tons of different rumors about what Microsoft is planning on doing with the Zune franchise. They started it up a while ago, as an MP3 player and Zune Marketplace. It's not amazingly famous, nor is it beating Apple's iPod in competition, but Zunes are high-quality devices and are getting a little popular.

And then the rumors started. Zune 2. Zune Phone. Zune Smartphone. Zune LOTS OF PHONES. Zune Project "Pink". Zune Touch. Zune HD. ZuneX. And most recently "xYz".

There are obviously many more, but here's a picture summary of the basic rumors:

Listen. I love my Zune. I've had it for almost a year now. It's terrific. It's never failed me once. When "Z2K" happened, my Zune was fine. I've never been happier with an MP3 player before.

But seriously, the rumors are starting to get out of hand.

Let me emphesize this. There will NEVER, EVER, EVER, be a "Zune Phone". Microsoft AREADY HAS A MOBILE PHONE BRAND. They wouldn't be so stupid as to force two brands to compete with each other over phones.

The Zune / Xbox hybrid "xYz" is a bit more plausible. There has yet to be a Microsoft handheld device to compete with Sony's PSP or the Nintendo DS, and Zune devices can stream to the Xbox already.

However, I'd like to say one important thing: Microsoft, can you PLEASE tell us what you're planning on doing? I'm sick of hearing the same rumors countless times without them actually leading to anything solid.

In case you haven't heard, here's how it goes: there are 9 menu items, and you can mix and match them. You can choose two for $3, three for $4, or four for $5. So that's about what, 20,000 different combinations?

So you're parading around complaining about that one comic that appeared. You know, the one with the monkey getting shot and the cop saying, "I guess they'll have to find somebody else to write the new stimulus bill." You know, the one directly above here.

Haven't we ALWAYS compared our government to a bunch of stupid, confused monkeys who do nothing but throw shit around all day? Since when did we turn this around and suddenly make it a racist and violent threat against the President?

And for the record, Obama did no write the whole damn over 9000-page stimulus plan entirely on his own. He pretty much came up with the idea and people who worked for him wrote it up for him.

This comic is a classic example of two things: 1. Comics that compare one media event to another are always going to go under fire for misunderstanding, and 2. People are stupid and racist.

To all of you out there. You know who you are.

I don't know if you noticed, but I'm tired of everything. It's not that I've stopped caring or loving any of you. It's just that my eyes have finally been opened to where this will all lead me.

It's a constant cycle, and a depressing one at that. I make a good, close friend, and before I know it, I'm having my heart ripped out piece by piece. I have to be there for your troubles. I have to be there to encourage and motivate you. I have to be there to make sure you don't go to bed in tears. And yet, with all this, I only seem to recieve coldness is return.

It's not that any of you despise me, oh no. I can only hope that the amount of my time I pour into you can be compared to how much you care for me. The issue is that I'm always, in the end of any drama or argument, left alone out in the cold, loveless and tired. I feel like I'm the father of all of you; I give until I've got not nothing left, and only get a quick "thanks" and a hug in return.

I don't think I can even consider love a beautiful thing anymore. Drake and Jake. If these words don't ring bells to you, you haven't known me for nearly as long as you think you have. After these two, I could only hope that I could move on, and believe somehow that God has a special person reserved just for me. But as of yet, it seems not.

I may not be the most perfect person on this planet, but I love you all and continue to give you all I've got. My ultimate fear, though, is that I'll find myself constantly giving until the day I die, and never recieve anything in return. If there's one thing I could ask of any of you, it's please, don't let me suffer that fate.

This is one post with pictures of food I wanted to remember, because they were delicious and awesome.

First, meals!

Upper-left picture: Chicken sandwich with fries at some place called Steak-and-Shake. Note the shake.
Upper-right: Pancakes! Yes, I like eating them for dinner.
Bottom-left: REALLY expensive chicken teriyaki. Took the picture because it was worth the price. :P

Hello, and welcome to DO WANT! This is when I take a short break from talking about important issues to stare at special things that I really want.
Let's start off this episode with something I REALLY DO WANT. The HP TouchSmart tx2.Let's see.
Massive screen that can turn the laptop into a tablet. Check.
Touchscreen and stylus. Check.
Fancy-pansy media center pre-installed. Check.
Amazing designs covering the entire machine. Check.
Reasonable price? Check!
Now for the ISSUE.
I'm running a Windows Vista Home Basic, this is Windows Vista Home Premium, and Windows 7 comes out next year with touchscreen optimization. By then, TONS of laptops like this one will be out.
Should I get this laptop now and install 7 when it's released, or wait until 7 comes out before I decide to switch computers?

Also, if you tell me to switch to Apple, leave immediately. I've used Apple computers before. They MADE me a dedicated Windows person.
Though I've never tried Linux. I should look into it. I hear it's good.

Anti-Obama Babble Needs To Stop

Seriously, I'm sick of this. It'd be okay to be against Obama's political views, but when you get a school bus of elementary students to chant "assassinate Obama" or tell 16-year-old girls that the American flag will be replaced with a KFC flag, there's something seriously wrong with you. Obama's going to be president starting in January, so stop complaining.

Also, why on Earth does racism still exist? Haven't we proven over the past hundred years that black people are just as capable of doing the same things that white people can do? Not to mention, WHY do we continue to identify each other as "black" or "white"?

It's frustrating. Why haven't we decided yet that skin color is JUST A FEATURE OF A PERSON? It's like an eye color, a weight, or a height; it's a perfectly natural part of being a human being. We need to learn to stop separating white from black and just identify each other as people. And since we've been perfectly capable of pulling this off since the beginning of time, it makes me wonder why it hasn't happened yet.

The same thing needs to happen for gay people too. I don't judge you for your political beliefs. I don't judge you for your moral beliefs. So why do you judge me for my sexual beliefs?

Windows Vs. Mac: Mac's Evil Secret

Screencaps and information about the next big opperating system, Windows 7, came out this week. Of course, looking at the screenshots, it looks stunning. And from what Microsoft has been telling us, it FEELS just as impressive.

However, some people are going apeshit over the taskbar. As with every incarnation of Windows, it has changed yet again. Some are complaining that it looks just like the Macintosh "Dock", and looks more intrusive than it needs to be.

I believe this is just not true; instead, Mac computers trick us with our eyes in order to get better visual appeal and make Windows computers look bad.

Here, for example, is the new Windows 7.

Stunning, eh? We see the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, doing its business.

Now here's a Mac. I couldn't get a decent screenshot, so I snagged this picture from the website.

Notice there's no bar at the bottom. It's instead at the top, with the Dock at the bottom.

Let's compare first the main "Bar" of both Operating Systems. Windows computers naturally have theirs at the bottom, while Macintosh computers have theirs at the top of the screen. This changes things much more than you'd think. When we're sitting, our eyes naturally look down, rather than up.

So when PC users look down, they see a bar. When Mac users look down, they see vast, empty space.

For the sake of the argument, I took a Windows and compared how it looks and feels if the bar is moved.

This is not my computer; I have a Windows Vista.

Now here is the same computer, with the Taskbar at the TOP of the screen:

See that? Instantly, despite the Taskbar not changing in size, or the rest of the screen, it instantly feels much bigger and easier to look at. And by the way, this is an actual screen caputer I took. You CAN move the Taskbar up (for those of you who didn't know). Mac computers look bigger because of a simple eye trick. Not to mention, most Macs come with oversized screens.

Function-wise, the difference between the Windows bar and Mac bar is that Mac's is made to be a UNIVERSAL bar that's used for all programs. Its functions, save for the Apple in the corner, change depending on what application is open.

Meanwhile they have the Dock at the bottom.

The Dock, while being a good idea, is implemented badly. It's a bar of shortcuts to various programs, shows all open programs, and includes the recycling bin at the end. The Dock's changed between versions, but it's maintained several important problems. I don't even need to explain the problems, because somebody else pointed them all out already.

The Dock's trick, however, is that it can be hidden and be changed in size, so Macs can maintain their "big and empty" feel. The Windows Taskbar comes standard as ALWAYS being visible. And with people always looking down, the Taskbar looks like it's in the way of everything.

What the Taskbar does that Mac will never accomplish, however, is combine Mac's two bars into one simple bar. In this way, it performs better than it seems. Mac users need to realize this, and quit whining that "OMG Microsoft stole Apple's ideas they need to get more creative" or whatever.

Whether Microsoft directly took Apple's idea or not, this is an important part of computer evolution; eventually a Windows PC and a Mac will look exactly the same, besides a logo.

Anime SuperCon 2008 - Anybody Going?

Dragonball: The Next Speed Racer, Probably

Now, I know what you're thinking: shouldn't I give Dragonball a chance before I so bluntly denounce it as the next live-action anime adaptation failure?

I should say I should, but after watching the trailer for the film, all expectations and hopes I had for this film shattered. It's already fallen into the same formula that Speed Racer ended up with, and from what I can tell, there's no hope at all for improving it in any possible way.

There's something that's supposed to happen when adapting comics or animated shows into live-action films. Quite simply, it's this: the film must have the same feel of the original series it's based on. This "feel" is based on characters, setting, and plot. Some great examples of films that have been able to hold this same feel are The Dark Knight, IronMan, and the Spiderman film series.

Then there are films that don't generate this same "feel" at all, and cause box office and review tragedy. Speed Racer is a proud example of this, and I'm sure Dragonball will follow in these footsteps.

Dragonball has all the signs of this. The characters look and feel differently from their animated forms. Goku still has his ridiculous hairstyle, but it's also too short to look cool in any possible way. Piccolo is no longer green, and thus, no longer a threat. The whole show is thrown into a stupid, late-teen Need For Speed sort of setting, rather than vast empty deserts from what I remember about the show. And instead of having exagurated, overly-muscular guys fighting with giant blasts of evergy, we've got these frail, skinny pretty boys. (Not that I don't MIND them; they just don't fit the characters.)

So yeah, unless this film suddenly shows signs of progress into resembling the original Dragonball show, I'm not planning on seeing it; I'll instead read the reviews and laugh, point at people who paid to watch it, and say "Told you so."

Also, this film better damn well have OVER NINE THOUSAND. And shut up about continuity.

If there's an anime that SHOULD be adapted into live action, it's Full Metal Panic!. I can seriously see that happening some day.

Our New Earth

The world, as we know it, is about to change drastically.

All eyes will be on the Large Hadron Collider, which will finally test the boundaries of modern physics, and possibly explain the origin of our own universe.

Many people, however, have panicked, believing this machine will ultimately bring the destruction of our beautiful Earth. This is, of course, complete nonsense. However, I feel the panic was important.

The world, as in the people, nature, and culture, has been taking a drastic downward spiral in the past few decades. In the past few years, no big changes have been made to how the world works; all we've done is suck up what our planet has, and compain about not having enough. We brought about a war which does not plan on ending anytime soon, in our current conditions. And we, as people, have lost our senses of diversity and focus our lives now through the Internet.

I hope, after the LHC incident has come and gone, we can bring upon ourselves a new era of change and progression. Let's find a new fuel supply, or finally invent a flying car. Let's end this terrible war and make peace with other nations. Let's change our own nation, America, for our own benefits, as well as for those around us.

What I really want, out of all this, is for us all to better appreciate what we have and try making it better.

A lot of stuff has been happening, and it's been dragging me away from here. Sorry guys!

So I've taken a road trip down from New York back home to Florida, and stopped at a glass museum and Washington DC on the way. I'm making a new web site with tons of information on what I saw and did. Be sure to check it out!

I also got around to seeing The Dark Knight. Amazing movie. I also got to see Step Brothers and Pineapple Express. I'll get around to reviewing them soon.

Wolf Nanaki's Movie Reviews!?

Wait, what? Yes, people, I am doing movie reviews now!

This summer, I've seen a few films, and I have an urge to write about them. So sit back and listen to my opinions!

Note: I'm keeping the reviews short and to the point.

KUNG FU PANDA

This movie I saw while I was at camp. The story focuses on a panda who wants to learn martial arts, and suddenly has to become the "Dragon Warrior" in order to save China from some superpowerful evil villain.

I actually liked this film a lot. It was emotional, it was humorous, and very well-animated. Jack Black's a damn impressive voice actor for films like this.

I would not have paid to see this though. Thankfully, I got in for free! ;D

So after leaving camp, I saw a few more movies:

THE LOVE GURU

Oh god. Oh dead sweet god. Why the hell did I see this?

Let's see, what's there to say about this? There's a forgettable plot, forgettable characters, and an unforgettable record for the most Pen Fifteen jokes. The acting is like watching a crumbling brick wall; it starts off strong to establish the cast of characters, but fades away and dies as this movie drags on and on.

If you love yourself, if you love your money, if you love your family; PLEASE don not go see this film.

WANTED

I will always wonder about this film. I know it's based on a comic series, but the movie is nearly NOTHING like it. I feel this may be LOOSELY based on the comic. And by loosely, I mean attached by only a few weak threads. The characters and plots are SIMILAR.

And that's all. The rest was some funky idea mishmashed by whatever director was in charge. The violence and action is great, but this seriously wasn't aimed for the comic fans. You can tell the only reason this was filmed was to get a good look at Angelina Jolie's rear.

GET SMART

Another movie based on something that turns out way better than the film itself! Who knew I would end up reviewing TWO?!

Steve Carell is the star of this film. You can guess that the film is going to be funny, just because he's in there. But the film goes from funny to fucked slowly...and painfully. The movie's plot and action are done nicely, but the directing and acting could use work.

You might as well watch reruns of the original show. Save yourself some time.

THE INCREDIBLE HULK

The film was...erm...decent? Thank goodness they got the original actor from the show to play the CGI Hulk, and to provide the voice. Also, bless the director for keeping Hulky at a consistent size. In the last film, he just kept growing, for NO REASON.

Hulk films usually don't turn out great, but this one was at least better than the new one from a few years back. I don't have high hopes for sequels, but of course, there's that Tony Stark showing up right before the credits. Oh god. More Marvel movies on the way.

ARASHI NO YORU NI (ONE STORMY NIGHT)

I feel honored to be able to review this film. It was actually released back in Japan in December 2005, but I was just able to see it a few days ago.

A goat named Mei and a wolf named Gabu become friends by chance, after meeting in a dark cabin one stormy night. However, their friends and family soon fight now, and the trust between the two is put to the ultimate test.

Of all the films I've reviewed tonight, this one goes down as the best film I've seen so far this year. The animation is rich and warm, the story is perfect, and the directing is amazing - I found myself tearing up by the end of the film. If there's anything you should do while the summer is young, take some time to watch a series of picture books come to life in a beautiful and creative way.

So what movies should I review next? Not sure. My friends tell me to check out Hellboy II, and The Dark Knight seems to be pretty popular as well. Whatever I see, I'll let you know about.

Away at Camp: Part 3

I leave camp tomorrow, a blessing and a curse.

On the positive side of camp, I made a ton of new friends, got a better taste on how people outside of the world think, and made some pretty amazing shirt designs. But there was also tons of bugs and terrible weather patterns, not to mention many boring activities.

I'm glad I'm not staying for another session though, because MTV is here.

What the fuuuuuuck.

They're filming some girl's experience here for some show called "Made" or something like that. The last thing I need after climbing millions of hills and hearing the New York accent everywhere I go is to see a bunch of cameramen filming everything I do.

I'll have plenty of pictures upon my return.

Also, I helped out some kid with her new V5 Tamagotchi. I'm so nice. ^^

My Plan to Save the World

We all know about now that the world is kind of screwed over, and that's an understatement.

Oil prices are skyrocketing. Food prices are soaring. Jobs are disappearing. I fear that if this continues the way it does today, another World War may break out over the basic human needs.

I have some ideas on what can be done to save our dying world.

First, we need to construct Floating Farms. It's a little idea I've got; artificial farms built indoors or above buildings that grow important crops, like wheat (which we're running out of). With proper regulation and a little time and effort, food can be produced cheaply, and there would be no more fears of flooding killing crops.

Also, we need to have a Democrat leading the country. Right now, the Republican party believes that all of our money and resources should go to a country that wants us dead. Oil prices are driving us mad, as all the oil we need for our everyday lives is going to our dying troops fighting for a lost cause.

We need to leave the country and go into a period of global hibernation; we stop meddling with the affairs of other countries and focus on the people here at home. We have kids that need to go to school, people who need to be fed, and an economy that needs to take a turnaround.

Also, could we NOT put a tariff on imported stuff? Maybe other countries would do the same, so we can SELL stuff?

And finally, we need the government to stop turning a blind eye towards big businesses. As the companies send their work to other countries, we lose work over here. They need to bring the factories back to America, and as a more helpful approach to saving the planet, start up farms in the foreign countries to increase food production.

That's my two cents, because I don't believe we should sit around and let the world die.

Yesterday, I left home at about 11 AM. I went on a long flight from where I am all the way to somewhere in New Jersey or New York (I'm not even sure where we landed, we were given two names). After that, we went on an "Airtrain" (which is really just a monorail) to get to the van.

After a gruelingly long van trip, I got to camp and got to my bunk. As luck would have it, I'm in a bed next to a poster of wolves!

So I thought the summer wouldn't be all that bad. But then I found the Computer Lab.

It's filled with iMacs.

Gentlemen.

You have no idea how awesome this convention was.

The convention this month had everything; friends, manga, and tons of yaoi.

Here's the Yaoi I managed to pick up. These three together were only 15 bucks. o_o

"bond(z)" I got because the cigarettes on the cover were very tempting. I got "The Crimson Spell" because it had tentacles. I've seen "Pet on Duty" around, and I wanted to get it for a while.

Also, I got the "Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories Complete Series" box set.

Just because I don't have a DS and can't play the game legally. :P

Also, I got to meet Chris Crocker.

Why is it that the first time I met such a pretty celebrity, I ended up looking like a retard? o_o;

Speaking of people...

Tons of cosplayers. One thing that irritated me to no end was the amount of Deathnote cosplayers. My god, they were EVERYWHERE. @_@;;;

Also, I got to visit my friend Zina's hotel room, because she's going there all three days. I got to have some Pocky, because no convention on this good planet is complete without the stuff.

And I saw a funny toilet in her bathroom. Is it Japanese? It reminds me of a Washiki.

My brothers were also at this convention. It was their first real convention experience. Reuben met the man from Thundercats, and Dante from Clerks.

Also, Master Shake can now be called the official FSC mascot. He's at EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM.

Overall, this year's convention was exciting and rewarding. I got to see some friends, make some new ones, got tons of mangas, and even handed out my business cards.

I really had fun, and I hope I'll be at the next convention. I just need to get some money. x_x

There was one part of the convention that just made it perfect.

I found an artist doing commissions, Luniara, and I gave her 10 bucks for a commission.

She drew and inked Wolf Nanaki, and it was AMAZING BEYOND ALL COMPREHENSION.

I wish I had a scanner, so you could see how epic this art truly is.

At the Heart of it All

Immelmann is an incredible artist.

For those of you who don't know, Immy is a webcomic artist. He's famous for his webcomic Concession, which has been online since July 2006.

He also does another, more personal webcomic, called At The Heart Of It All. This comic is more like a tour of Immy's mind; comics focus on his hopes, dreams, fears, and insecurities.

The two more recent updates to this comic are truly amazing. You must see for yourself.

May 4, 2008 - Screens.

"Screens", by itself, is an inspirational strip enough. Surrounded by countless screens, Immy sits quietly in a chair, watching the nature outside. It's depressing how the modern world keeps you bottled up inside, isn't it?

May 11 - Deterioration

It's the same image, but...everything's deteriorated. The screens surrounding the artist are smashed, and Immy sits in the center, still looking out, now with an IV on his weakened and frail body, and numbers are scratched on the walls.

May 18 - Escape.

The stunning conclusion. Immy breaks from his hole and escapes into the night.

These comics are really powerful stuff. We work so hard in our daily lives that we forget to enjoy the world. We turn our homes, our offices, our classrooms, into nothing but miniature prisons, and forget how to return to nature and enjoy the ride of life.

After I first saw these, I went outside, and watched the sun set.

Now, however, I feel like I can't survive a single day. I think the stress is getting to me; I've been waking up earlier, and then later, and earlier again. I'm tired all the time, my family is always yelling at me, and I never have any time to hang out with my friends.

Dammit, this sucks.

Capcom: Fixing Okami Covers, No Watermarks!

Hey, Jude, don't make it bad... Take a sad song and make it better...

...Anyway, recently, there's been tons of Okami in the media, due to an IGN watermark showing up on the cover. A massive embarrassment for Capcom, I'm sure, as well as a headache. But somehow, they managed to take it and make it awesome.

For a limited time, you can get a new cover for your Okami game free! Which is totally awesome, because they provide some wonderful "alternative" covers. I ordered the one with the plains.

It sucks that this whole watermark accident happened to start with, but I'm in love with the new covers. Thank you Capcom, for being so amazing.

Everybody's been having a field day with the recent images of Miley that have surfaced onto the net. As a person who goes online frequently, I must inform you of a few things.

These images are fantastically OLD. They've been around since 2007.

And by the way, all teenage girls are required to, at one point of another, take such images of themselves.

How do I know that? Because ALL girls do it! Miley isn't the first to pull such a "stunt", you uninformed losers. Go to MySpace; you'll find PLENTY of underage girls wearing half a shirt and barely any underwear.

And calling these "nude" images is a drastic overstatement. And saying that she's "gone wild" is drawing the line of what "going wild and nude" is. Apparently, nowadays, a celebrity is considered to be "nude" if they've got only a shirt and underwear on.

Honestly, do you media losers LOVE tearing people apart?

McCain is going to win, and as we all know, that means we're screwed.

How do I know this? Let me explain.

The Democratic party is split between Obama and Clinton. In my person opinion, either one of them would make a great President. They're both very intellectual, experienced, and want to make a change for our great nation.

But if one of them loses, that person's supporters will refuse to vote.

Let's say, in an example, that Clinton ends up losing, and the race is left between Obama, McCain, and that Nader guy. Why is he even there? In the end, whoever was backing Clinton will NOT go to the pools and vote, or they'll vote against Obama, because they don't want him.

In the end, Obama will get a good number, but McCain will be able to get enough more to make Obama cry.

And as we all know, the gay hating McCain would be like a third term Bush.

What is this? I'm writing a review? Yes, it is!

I'm going to start reviewing manga! Isn't that nice? You get to finally read something WORTHWHILE in this blog!

Today, I will be reviewing Psychic Power Nanaki, by Manga-ka Ryo Saenagi, released in November 2007 by Tokyopop. Oh, is it a coincidence that Wolf Nanaki is reviewing a book about Nanaki?

This manga starts you off fast. A high school boy, Nanaki, is hit by a car. A few days later, he returns to school, only for tons of odd and unusual things happening in his wake. Suddenly, another boy, Ao, appears and reveals that the problems at school are Nanaki's own fault - turns out, the accident gave Nanaki psychic powers. However, he needs to get them under control; this is where the Paranormal Task Force appears, who investigate psychic crimes and train psychics to use their powers properly.

This book does so many things right that I barely know where to begin. The author uses time wisely and properly; he gets directly to the most important parts of the story, whether it be for a part of the story's plot development, or character development. No time is ever wasted on the lesser things, like quick comic relief, pointless bickering, or the classic scene of one main character staring up at some starry sky and questioning themselves. This manga knows how to pull you in to a good story. I wasn't even interested in the psychic genre before getting this!

The story itself is kept rather low, but only to prepare the characters for something bigger. The two leads - Nanaki and Ao - have clashing personalities; Nanaki is loud, outspoken, and adventurous, while Ao is silent and mysterious, yet not by too much. This, and not to mention their massive differences in Psychic abilities, makes scenes between the two fun and interesting to read.

The artwork is very impressive to boot. The artist seemingly knows what he's doing; the background and characters both stand out equally well, and the art is topped off with a nicely-done clean cut layout on each page. Artwork is always given great detail. Scenes ranging from Nanaki walking to school to the sight of a wooden zombie puppet (which freaked out my friend, by the way) are all equally drawn with impressive style.

This manga has tons of room to expand and become great. I'm picking up Volume 2 as soon as it shows up around here!

In January, I entered my story, The Werewolf and the Businessman, into a short-story contest.

On Friday, Lauren Groff, author of Monsters of Templeton, came to our school to announce the winners and to talk to students about writing. My story got second place! :D

I got my picture taken with her, and the first place kid (he wrote a story about a snail on a leaf) and I got to have lunch with her. The lunch was funny; we had chicken salad, they both weren't eating meat, and I didn't eat salad, so I took their chicken and gave the senior kid my salad. xD

After that, the dessert was cookies the size of our hands. o_o

For my prize, I'm getting $75 US soon, and first place gets $100.

I'm starting to think clones of me were made and dropped all over the world, because I've been experiencing a bunch of weird coincidences as of late.

Robert Roy "Nanaki" of Nanaki Central is almost like a European version of me. We're almost exactly the same; both bi, into video games, and go by Nanaki. I've talked to him on YiM; he's pretty cool.
A Gaia Online user named Nanaki Wolf, with the same qualities as Rob, except that he's gay instead of bi, and he's Scottish. I haven't talked to this person yet.
A web site called Wolf And Nanaki Online. It was last updated in 2006, but it's still worth a visit.

Maybe someday, all of us Nanaki's can meet up in one big Nanakifest or something...where I will be the host...and eventually, their leader and ruler when we conquer the world! xD

My take on Furry, and Toonism

Something that has been bugging me for a while now is how furries are treated.

It's been publically bashed, denounced as sinful, and now most furry-related material is banned for many image boards. They are looked down on, and making furries miserable is treated like some sort of honorable act. It's even been called a "gateway" that will lead people into into sick and disturbing tastes.

I, for one, am fed up with this. Why can't the people of the internet learn to accept the furry fandom? Is it because of what is seen on TV?

If it's because of the whole irrational fear of Bugs Bunny being part of the furry fandom, then I propose a new branch of what is found on the internet.

Perhaps there can be a new thing called "Toonism", which is directly related to all "Cartoon" characters, as in from Looney Toons, Disney, etc. It would be entirely separate from Furries, mainly because Toonism could include HUMAN characters as well as anthropomorphic ones.

Would that stop the anti-Furry mistreatment?

Disney Channel STILL Sucks

Disney Channel has REALLY found a way to drive parents insane.

In most recent months, Disney has focused on spending all their time and money on their "Hannah Montana" franchise, which is currently dominating the preteen audience of America (especially with young girls). The television show focuses on Miley Stewart (played by Miley Cyrus, what a CREATIVE writing team).

The show has gained global popularity, thanks to its carefully planned-out sitcom formula that Disney has been following since That's So Raven. The formula is carefully recorded and followed to par: terrible acting, weak plot points, ridiculous circumstances, and celebrity guest stars.

The show's massive popularity has sparked a wave of extreme bitchiness for the children of America. Thanks to a lack of discipline being instilled, kids have adopted an attitude of "I-need-to-get-this-toy-or-else-I'll-scream-really-loud".

Honestly, if you interview ANY parent with preteen girls, Hannah Montana is 90% likely to come up somewhere in the conversation. Disney has leached the show out of oblivion; kids are now ready to kill for tickets to shows, which are sold out anyway, so don't expect to get any tickets to shows soon.

But since kids can't get these wonderfully expensive things themselves, they turn to their spineless parents in order to get the stuff. Parents, in turn, go to hell and back to get the Hannah gear. Some even go as far as to lie about their husbands dying in Iraq.

Disney, for the love of all things holy, LEAVE THE PARENTS ALONE. Focus a little bit on something ELSE. Please? If you're driving the target audience to this level, you're becoming some sort of weird media tyranny. You don't even have any REAL commercials on your channel - you just advertise more Disney crap!

The UFOs, and How I Feel About Them

As you've probably heard, there have been TONS of UFO sighting in the recent months, along with videos for evidence.

And yet, there's STILL debate over if they're real or not.

I believe that there's a pretty good chance that they're real, and the government doesn't worry and gives crap answers to nagging questions because they know that as long as there's controversy over this issue, nobody's going to panic.

Of course, the only reason I'm not worried is because I know that I'll be controlling them someday and leading them into battle.

THE WEREWOLF AND THE BUSINESSMAN
Based on an Aesop Story

There once lived a pack of werewolves in New York City. The humans feared them greatly, so they lived on the outskirts of the town. They had to struggle to get by with the little food they had.

One day, a werewolf was in a small park. A large and well-dressed businessman was at a stand, buying a hot dog. The businessman saw the werewolf, and took pity.

“Werewolf,” he asked, “How can you survive when you have no food in the wild? You should move into the city; we have plenty of food here. I eat every day and never worry.”

The werewolf thought for a moment. “Yes,” he said quietly to himself, “It would be nice not to have to struggle daily for small bites of food.”

The Best Analogy Ever

Today, a friend of mine needed help telling the difference between the real and virtual world. This friend, who won't be named, had started to believe that reality is fake and the internet life is real.

So I though about it, and I came up with an AMAZING analogy.

Here it is.

The internet world (as in forums, chatrooms, etc.) is like a cigarette.

Seriously.

Some smokers smoke because they want to escape life, and cigarettes make them feel a lot better. But in reality, the cigarette doesn't actually help; it just messes with their head, and hurts more than helps.

And eventually, it becomes an addiction; you can't escape it until it's too late.

Doesn't that sound familiar to some of you internet addicts?

Disney Channel Sucks

I wonder what kind of people come up with the crap that ends up airing on Disney Channel, because it all just fails HARD.

Wizards of Waverly Place, the newest show on Disney focuses on the life of a teenage girl named Alex Russo, played by one-shot character actor Selena Gomez who briefly made cameo appearances on two other Disney shows, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, and Hannah Montana, both shows very successful in their run.

The premise is that Alex and her two brothers are "Wizards-in-Training", and their parents homeschooling them about using magic. The kids are not allowed to use ANY of their magic without adult supervision. While the premise sounds decent, it creates a HUGE problem with the show.

EVERY SINGLE DAMN EPISODE IS THE SAME.

It's basically like this in every episode: kid learns new magic, parents say no, kid does magic anyway, craziness occurs, kid is sorry and doesn't do magic, REPEAT.

The writing staff of the show must be fast asleep at their desks, much like the audience that halfway bothers to watch this thing Disney happened to cough up one day. The show is so uncreative and boring that it ACTUALLY RECYCLED A SET FROM ANOTHER SHOW.

If you just so happen to have eyeballs, watch the scenes with the school. The ENTIRE set is just the same school set from Cory In The House, massively redecorated to look different. Check the rest of the episodes for even MORE recycled material. Speaking of sets and things, they SERIOUSLY need to work on their animation techniques. The Magic Carpet things (which they dug out from what was left of Aladin) are so poorly animated, and I KNOW the kids have noticed.

Most of any show's core, besides the writing, is the acting, so this show is pretty much garbage. The acting on the show is downright atrocious. Most characters speak in monotone...the actors don't really make me feel like I'm watching a show about magic. They just don't seem like they're really into their roles, and I can hardly blame them.

In all honesty Disney Channel, your whole Sitcom boom is coming to a screeching halt with this last piece of garbage. Give up your unusual fetish with a recorded audience and pay attention to your REAL audience.

Where I am, there are certain people who talk ENDLESSLY. I don't mean they talk about things I don't care about though.

I mean, they talk to people for a VERY long time, about stuff that NOBODY cares about, in the most ANNOYING voices. They might talk about some old TV show, extremely personal stuff, or just general garbage firing out of their mouths.

I'm AS, and I've been down the road of being annoying too, but I'm not now, and these guys are worse than I ever was, or could have ever dreamed of being.

The Tamagotchi Issue

There are several ways that I can point out that Bandai America is having a difficult time promoting the Tamagotchi Connection product. Their current attempts at bringing the virtual pet to their audience is irking me, and I would like to address these problems and concerns before the Tamagotchi relives their own history.

For those of you that don't know, the Tamagotchi is the first virtual pet on the market. They were developed and sold originally back in 1996, but Bandai was not expecting the wave of demand that the new innovative technology faced. By the time Bandai DID have enough funding to produce many models of Tamagotchi, the boom had gone to bust, and Bandai was left in mounting dept with millions of unsold toys.

In 2004, a project was developed to return the pets to market. Takeichi Hongo was named the first Chief Tamagotchi Officer, “CTO”, and the Tamagotchi returned to the world as the Tamagotchi Plus. It later followed suit outside Japan, known as the “Tamagotchi Connection” in America, and the “Tamagotchi Connexion” in European countries.

With the rebirth of the product came a need to change their advertising. Instead of flashy advertising, it was instead chosen to work with children's magazines to advertise and review the Tamagotchi. In America, however, Bandai chose commercials on popular television programming such as Nickelodeon.

Now the Tamagotchi product is more stable and consistent. In Japan, however, the product has been given enough attention and demand that it has expanded greatly beyond prediction, which we shall discuss later. However, outside the Japanese borders, most of the population considers Tamagotchi a fad that died out some time in the 90's.

Bandai's advertising for the Tamagotchi continues on Nickelodeon, but only on extremely rare occasions. Nowadays, Bandai focuses more on relying on the Internet in order to get the message across about Tamagotchi. Unfortinutely, their strategy is not working, and the newest edition of Tamagotchi, the V4.5, is piling up on the shelves.

While Bandai Japan carefully advertises Tamagotchi within areas of the target audience, meaning things related to girls ages 9 through 12, Bandai America has not gone anywhere near these areas. While it is to be said that the Internet is a terrific resource to get information and learn about developing products, Bandai America has still yet to implement it correctly.

It appears that Bandai relies on TamaTalk.com in order to give Tamagotchi fans information about upcoming Tamagotchi products. However, this also limits the amount of people that actually learn something new about the pet. Rather than advertising on just one forum, Bandai should instead take into consideration promoting their product on other children's websites.

In fact, Bandai should consider promoting their Tamagotchi pets on kids' online communities. I can think of two right off the bat: Gaia Online, and Nicktropolis. Bandai should be constantly checking in on competition, and see what's becoming popular, so that they mad advertise their product accordingly. I also suggest bringing in the Deka Tamagotchi. These were massive Tamagotchi's that could be found in Japanese stores, where users could connect their Tamagotchi in order to make unique friends and earn special prizes. It would be nice to see Bandai use this idea when it comes to displaying their product at conventions, popular stores, and whatnot.

One thing I have noticed is that in almost every review or article mentioning the Tamagotchi brand, there is always some mention that Tamagotchi was “an old 90's fad”. There also seems to be constant moments where the writer asks, “Remember the Tamagotchi?”. I feel as though this throws people off into believing that Bandai is doing nothing but attempting to pull a dying fad from the grave, and gets people less interested. Please, find a way to say that Tamagotchi is a newer and better product than what it was previously.

I highly suggest showing off the Tamagotchi world a bit more. Many people seem to believe that Tamagotchi characters are nothing but pixels on the screen, and not developed characters rich with personality.

To do this, I suggest a dub of the anime and motion picture. In Japan, a 90-minute animated film was released on December 15, 2007, and a short animated series, with each episode only up to 2 minutes and 50 seconds in length (similar to Hamtauro), debuted shortly before. It would do Bandai plenty of good to have these dubbed and brought overseas. I would suggest continuing to work with Nickelodeon, or otherwise turn to Disney, as they have handled dubbing the Digimon series in recent years.

I might also suggest that when it comes to showing the fans the future of Tamagotchi, Bandai should have a consistent method of doing as such. In January, a new Tamagotchi, the V5 Familitchi, is to be released globally, and the majority of Tamagotchi fans learned this from the Japanese websites rather than hearing it from Bandai America themselves.

As far as the product itself goes, I am very proud of Bandai and their ongoing efforts to make the virtual pets more suitable for the global audience. Despite the changes between the Japanese and American pets, they mostly follow a similar formula, and they are just as enjoyable as the Japanese ones.

The only thing Bandai should do now is look over their colors and designs for the upcoming Version 5 release. Bandai America usually decks each Tamagotchi with tons of ridiculous and splashy colors in order to grab pre-teen girls' attention, and based on what I've seen, the V5 will be no exception. The design I've seen is absolutely UGLY. No offense, but couldn't you tone it down to a simple, solid color? And perhaps with a small pattern? Look more to the Japanese shell colors and designs, please. They're much easier on the eye.

I hope Bandai hears these concerns and takes into consideration a change in promoting the Tamagotchi Connection brand, in hopes of avoiding the same crash and burn from the 90's.

Oh yeah, I went.

And I had an awesome time! :D

The place was really crowded when I got there...and there were 1 or 2 people smoking outside. -_-; But then my friend Stephanie showed up, and we went inside. ^^

So I got in, and Zina helped pay for my ticket (I paid for half, $10). Then we went inside and looked at...just about everything. There was TONS of merch and things, and cosplayers, and notable people in the voice acting and animation community giving out autographs. Like the original Red Ranger from Power Rangers, and that girl who voices Cartman's mom in South Park.

The best part, however, had to be the Yaoi Dating Sim. They took 4 cosplayers (all guys), made them into couples, and made them tell the audience about...stuff...like things they do, how they met, etc. It had to be the funniest thing that I saw that day.

Also, before I left, Zina took me to the hotel's resteraunt and got me dinner (she paid for it, because she's awesome like that). I know what I got, I just forgot what it was called, stupid me.... something Alfredo with grilled chicken. It was really good though.

And so she took me upstairs to her friend's room, we said goodnight, and I went downstairs to hang out with Steph before my dad came to pick me up.

I spent about $50 that day. @_@; First, I gave $10 to Zina to pay for my ticket. Then, I spent $20 on some Marvel Zombies thing for my brother, Reuben.

And I spent my last $20 on a BEAUTIFUL Okami artwork in a frame. I will hang it up in my room, once I get the time.

Tamagotchi's Love Earth More Than Us

It's a shocking, but sadly true, fact.

The Tamagotchi characters seem to care more about Earth right now than we have within the past thousand years. The new website for the upcoming Version 5 release include a game where you, quite literally, suck the polluted air out of our fancy blue planet, using a giant vaccum UFO, in order to stop the dreaded Global Warming.

Of course, we all know that the reason that they care about our planet at all is because they want to suck our money supply dry. But we can overlook that, because at least SOMEBODY cares about our planet.

Also included on the site is the short flash segment, "Kuchipatchi's Eco-friendly Life", a short series of images showing Kuchipatchi (the green Tamagotchi with a beak) giving out useful tips on how we can reduce waste and save lots of energy.

All I can say is that I hope people can actually start listening to these disturbingly cute little guys. Because in all seriousness, if it gets to the point where virtual pets care more about the Earth than we do, we're probably screwed.

Clover Edition TMGC

Now that I have this blog, I'd love to share with you my Clover Edition TMGC project.

For those of you that don't know, TMGC is short for "Tamagotchi". Tamagotchi is a series of virtual pets (and the FIRST virtual pets at that). Developed in 1996 and still around today, they've sold millions around the globe.

The Clover Edition TMGC project is a collection of ideas and concepts to create the ultimate Tamagotchi; a virtual pet that has what the fans of Tamagotchi want to see.

Yes, that IS BomberNanimon from Digimon painted orange with a leaf. :P

How did this happen? Blame Disney. They were dubbing Digimon Savers (Digimon Data Sqlad) when they saw something in Episode 7.

They noticed that near the end of the episode, a BomberNanimon invades a crowded theme park and starts tossing bombs everywhere.

They noticed that BomberNanimon is a big, BLACK, WALKING BOMB that throws BOMBS.

So they said, in the simplest of terms, "No giant walking bombs that throw bombs".

So the Digimon team (bless them xD ) decided to come up with something to replace it, while keeping the episode unchanged (or unaired, for that matter). So they made Citramon, a giant walking orange that throws exploding limes.

It's absolutely ridiculous, and the fruity puns got annoying after a while, but it was still pretty clever. :D

My real name is Reagan, but here, call me Nanaki. I'll use this blog to talk about TONS of things. Maybe my HTML class, my Clover Edition TMGC project, my personal writing, or lots of other things. Maybe personal opinions on things happening in the world and media.
